WAMSS Sports has a full calendar of events throughout the year with a variety of team and individual sports available. Sport provides an outlet for stress and improves both physical and mental wellbeing.
The WAMSS sporting year kicks off with WAMSS Wipeout, a fun filled afternoon on the Matilda Bay Foreshore which sees teams from each year of medicine competing against each other in exciting events, accompanied by a sausage sizzle and music. It is a great example of teamwork, with any disharmony resulting in a dip in the swan river!
Interyear sports is a competition held throughout the year over several weeks. The different year levels compete against each other in soccer, basketball, table tennis, beach volleyball, football, netball and Hunt Cup (running). The winning year group (always closely contested) is then announced at the Medical Dinner.
WAMSS Sports also organises and takes part in inter-varsity events.
The Curtin Physio vs WAMSS footy match is a hotly contested competition in which WAMSS plays the Therapy Students Association (TSA) in football. The TSA is a group of OT, Physio, Speech Therapy and Health Science students from Curtin University.
WAMSS also plays Notre Dame in football and touch rugby later in the year, a well attended competition with a great atmosphere and plenty of spectators.
In 2014, WAMSS hosted the inaugural Tri-Varsity netball competition, in which ladies' and mixed netball teams from UWA, Notre Dame and Curtin Physio played each other in a round robin competition, followed by refreshments at the UWA tavern.
In addition to all of the above, WAMSS always has a team in the annual City to Surf, as well as participating in UWA Relay for Life each year!
