Students Passionate About Mental Health (SPAMH) is a group of medical students at the University of Western Australia (UWA) founded in July 2011 and dedicated to raising awareness about the link between mental health, general health and wellbeing. We aim to reduce public stigma against mental illness and psychiatry and promote a positive perception of mental health within UWA, the medical community and the wider community.
We also aim to equip medical students with the knowledge and skills to be effective advocates for mental health patients and professionals.
Our signature event is a Q & A session held in the latter half of each year. Consisting of a panel of professionals in fields ranging from politics to psychiatry, the night is always well-attended by students, doctors and the general public.
In 2012 we began running ‘Coffee Club’ sessions – opportunities for inquisitive minds to discuss mental health topics with knowledgeable guest speakers providing stimuli in an intimate and supportive environment.
In addition to running activities in support of R U OK? Day annually, SPAMH is turning its focus to collaborations with other mental health organisations.
We look forward to continued success this year!
