What is the SHMRC?

The Students in Health and Medical Research Conference is an evening research symposium for students. Students are invited to submit an abstract, and top abstracts will be selected for research presentation. The Conference is intended to raise the profile of student researchers, to give them opportunity to present their work, and to contribute towards a strong, collaborative research environment in WA. Student researchers will be presenting to an audience of Faculty staff, clinicians, students and all interested individuals in the community.

This event runs annually, beginning in 2007 in conjunction with the 50th Anniversary celebrations of the UWA Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences.

Student researchers submit their abstracts using the SHMRC abstract template, and will be notified of their success. The  top submissions will be invited to present their research verbally at the SHMRC in October.  Attendance at the SHMRC is free, food and alcohol will be provided free of charge.

The 2008 Organising Committee, WAMSS and UWA faculty  extend a warm invitation to our colleagues and friends to attend the SHMRC to be held in October 2008. We look forward to promoting the contribution that medical and allied health students have to excellence in medical research.

SHMRC 2008 Wrap-up

The 2008 SHMRC aimed to raise the profile of undergraduate medical and health research at the University of Western Australia and we think that the night went fantastically. To echo the judges and many in the audience, the calibre of the presentations was absolutely top notch. Obviously students are doing some amazing work, but the quality of the presentations themselves was also extremely high. I hope the speakers all realise that they are themselves inspirational to fellow students and their senior colleagues. The judges praised the standard to being similar to what would be expected at an international research conference.

We hope that those who attended enjoyed the night and learnt something from it.

Initially we didn’t plan on awarding a prize to every presenter, but because the research and presentations were all of such high quality, the judges decided that no presenter should go home empty handed. All nine researchers were awarded prizes. Special recognition should go to Mike Kamara and Sally Banfield for taking out this year’s top honours. The awards were:
  • School of Medicine and Pharmacology award for Most promising young investigator: Mike Kamara (5th year MBBS, BMedSci)
  • WAIMR award for Best verbal presentation: Sally Banfield (5th year MBBS, BmedSci)
  • CTEC award for most novel research:  Natalia Sampaio (B.Sc. Honours in Pharmacology)
  • Combined University Centre for Rural Health award for Best rural poster: Michaelia Verbeek (3rd year MBBS)
  • WA Department of Health award for Verbal Presentation highly commended: Alex Tan (6th year MBBS,  BMedSci)
  • UWA Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences award for Best Bachelor of Medical Science project presentation: David Cruise (BmedSci) and Varun Malik (6th Year MBBS, BMedSci)
  • Princess Margaret Hospital Clinical Research Facility award for Best contribution to a “Healthy start in life”: Tabitha Mok (4th Year MBBS)
  • Royal Australian College of General Practitioners award for Research of greatest clinical significance: Anand Venkataraman (4th year MBBS)
  • School of Surgery award for Best poster: Jasmine Singh (5th year MBBS)
  • School of Womens’ and Infants’ Health award for Best methodology and research design: James Anderson (6th Yr MBBS, BMedSci)

We would like to thank our sponsors again, especially our major sponsors – The Western Australian Institute for Medical Research (WAIMR) and the UWA school of Medicine and Pharmacology. Thankyou to our excellent judges – Prof John Newnham, Dr Fiona Pixley and Prof George Yeoh.

Already looking forward to SHMRC 2009! Hope to see you all there again.

Sincerely,

Sarah O’Neill and Patrick Wong
