What is education doing for you?

Whilst is it not the only reason we go to uni, our education does deserve to be a priority ...

In a field that is academically challenging and constantly evolving, we need inspiration from our teachers, passion in their teaching, and a curriculum that is both dynamic and sensitive to the nature and needs of the students who are being taught.  These are the factors that will enable us to not just learn for learning's sake, but to do it with zest and excitement!

With this in mind, the purpose of your WAMSS Education Portfolio is as such - to help you get the most out of your education!

Your WAMSS Education Portfolio consist of:

  •  Education Officer
  •  Undergraduate Year Representatives - 2 in each of Years 1 to 6 plus one RCS rep
  •  Graduate Entry Medical Program Representatives - 2
  •  Australian Medical Students Society (AMSA) Representative
  •  Student Grand Round Co-ordinators

Together with the Executive Council (President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer), we:

  •  Regularly talk to students to identify educational issues which affect our learning
  •  Present feedback, issues and strategies in a constructive manner to various forums such as the: Medical Curriculum Council, Faculty Board, Year Committees, Guild Education Council and;
  •  Work together with the faculty to develop ways to improve our education.

The Education Portfolio maintains the link between medical students and their faculty.  We are a passageway through which your feedback and suggestions may reach the people who are directly responsible for your learning, thus facilitating smooth and effective delivery of a dynamic and continually improving medical course.

Happy learning!

The Australian Medical Students’ Association (AMSA) is the peak representative body for medical students throughout the country. AMSA is heavily involved with a number of federal and state government bodies, as well as professional bodies, and individual universities. AMSA influences policy development on a vast number of issues which are pertinent to medical students across the country. Two representatives from WAMSS sit on the AMSA National Council, which meets three times a year.

Each National Council meeting spans three days, and is a forum for discussion about issues affecting individual medical schools around the country, as well as larger issues which affect all medical students. WAMSS has had a strong voice on this committee, and we have aimed to represent the views of our members, by seeking feedback on pertinent issues prior to the meetings. We have also focussed on keeping our members informed of decisions and policy changes which have occurred at National Council by liaising with the WAMSS committee, year group representatives, and the student body in general.

2007 has so far been a really successful year for our AMSA subcommittee, the "AMSA Forum", which is chaired by WAMSS’ AMSA Representative. This has enabled WAMSS to publicise and increase interest in AMSA, and actively involve more students in the events that are run.

AMSA Convention

The AMSA convention is an annual event during which medical students from every medical school in Australia and New Zealand are invited to attend a week-long conference. The AMSA Convention in 2007 is being held in Adelaide, as they valiantly attempt to reach the standard set in Perth in 2006.

Other AMSA Events

AMSA is involved in a large range of events nationwide - the AMSA Developing World Conference, the AMSA Leadership Development Seminar and the annual AMSA Blood Drive. Check out the AMSA website for further details of their range of events and issues. www.amsa.org.au

You can sign up to become a free AMSA member by registering online at their website.
